Gemini Day

Gemini Day by Bruce Harris cover

‘Gemini Day’ is the rollercoaster epic of an Englishman and an American woman who meet and fall in love in the Spanish Civil War. They are both journalists forced to flee to southern France. In an old farmhouse, Ruth gives birth to their child, Susannah, on the same day as a fugitive Spanish woman shot by Nationalists gives birth to a son and dies almost immediately. Ruth and her husband Bob adopt the boy and call him Rafael after his murdered father. They name the day when their children were born as Gemini Day, and the story tracks the Gemini Days of the future.

Reviews

Gemini Day by Bruce Harris An absolutely fantastic historical fiction starting from The Spanish Civil War to more recently. I loved this book. The story is set during the Spanish war. Adkin and Ruth are fleeing Spain for France, she is pregnant and due any day. They head to a village where they meet Madame Claudette, she’s the one who looks after everyone. In the other room is Susannah; she’s pregnant and has been shot whilst her husband was killed, she survived but died giving birth. Adkin and Ruth take the boy in as their own but rather than call the day their birthday, they name it Gemini Day, the day they were both born.

The story then follows the children as they get older as they celebrate each Gemini day. A really fascinating read. I just loved the idea behind the story. It follows the family throughout history as they celebrate each Gemini day. The story picks up when the children are turning 10 and in diary form it explains what has happened. I absolutely loved this story, it was quite sad at times as different events happened. This is one of those reads that stays with you.
